Henri J. M. Nouwen talks about the hazards of ladder climbing in his book In the Name of Jesus. Basically, he points out how the individual's desire to climb to the next position or pay raise often hurts his/her ministry as it is currently.
A pastor of a small church who is seeking to become pastor of a larger church will often pastor the smaller church differently. Also the pastor may leave the church before God is ready for him/her to move, to the detrement of both churches perhaps. Nouwen talks about this in greater detail.
Here are 2 questions:
What are the other potential consequences of ladder climbing?
How can we reconcile the need to reject ladder climbing with culture?
